Tomaj Salehi denied visits and phone calls

Tomaj Salehi was denied access to and telephone contact with his family and lawyer.

A year has passed since the arrest of freedom-loving artist Tomaj Salehi, and he is still in temporary detention, a detention that his lawyer claims is illegal.

Amir Raisian, the lawyer of Tomaj Salehi, announced that his client has been denied the right to make phone calls and meet with his family. In an interview with a local media outlet, he said: “The issue of Tomaj’s broken leg led us to file a complaint with the Civil Service Prosecutor’s Office, and on the other hand, the publication of some false information by certain media outlets regarding Tomaj’s arrest led us to file complaints with the Culture and Media Prosecutor’s Office.

"But unfortunately, in recent days, restrictions have been placed on calls, visits, and other rights of a prisoner, such as using the gym. Of course, we hope that these restrictions are due to a mistake and have nothing to do with the filing of these complaints, and that the situation will return to normal in the coming days."

Referring to the rights of a defendant in prison, Mr. Raisian added: "It is not clear to me how a defendant does not have the right, for example, to contact his lawyer or family members? Moreover, one year has passed since Tomaj's detention, and according to legal standards, continuing his temporary detention order with his current charges for more than one year is illegal, and such a procedure will both violate Tomaj Salehi's legal rights and create the suspicion of discrimination in the implementation of the amnesty directive."
