Khamenei's military advisor: We cannot carry out a coup

Referring to concerns about the military coming to power in Iran, Hossein Dehghan, a military advisor to the Leader of the Islamic Republic, said that "a coup cannot be carried out" in this country and that the conditions are not such that "the military will put aside others and replace them with their chosen person."

He, who himself is a presidential candidate, expressed concern in an interview published on Tuesday, March 9, by the ISNA news agency about the possibility of an "organized" movement by the military to "occupy a political position," but said, "In Iran, which is on the verge of entering a new century, there is no possibility of militarization and the imposition of martial law."

In addition to Hossein Dehghan, Saeed Mohammad, commander of the IRGC's Khatam al-Anbiya headquarters, also resigned from his position two days ago and announced his candidacy in the 2021 presidential elections.

In the media, the names of figures such as Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Ali Larijani, Parviz Fattah, Mehrdad Bazrpash, and Mohsen Rezaei, all of whom have military and IRGC backgrounds, also appear on the list of candidates for the 2019 presidential election.

In an interview with ISNA, Hossein Dehghan opposed existing concerns about a military figure becoming president in Iran, emphasizing that "it is a citizen's right for a military person to run for office in any election."
