US Deputy Secretary of State calls for investigation into 2018 executions in Iran

On Thursday, December 10, the US State Department's Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor supported the United Nations' call for Tehran to conduct an independent investigation into the 1988 executions in Iran and called on the international community to force the Islamic Republic to accept this request.
Robert Destro tweeted: “The United States reiterates the UN’s call for an independent investigation into the mass disappearances and summary executions in Iran in 1988. However, the alleged involvement of current senior officials makes it highly unlikely that the regime itself will conduct an investigation.”
He added: "The regime has failed to provide families with information about the fate of their loved ones. Instead, they have threatened families and desecrated the sites where the victims are buried. We call on the international community to hold the regime (Islamic Republic) accountable as demanded by the United Nations."
Recently, a group of UN human rights experts warned the Iranian government in a letter that the country's past and ongoing human rights violations in the case of the killing of prisoners in the summer of 1988 could be considered crimes against humanity, and if these violations continue, they will demand an international investigation.
