Study finds half of world's children exposed to poverty, war, and gender discrimination

A children's advocacy foundation announced in a report on Wednesday, June 29, that more than half of the world's children are exposed to three threats: war, poverty, and gender discrimination against girls.

According to AFP, the Save the Children Foundation, in its report, ranked the situation of children in 175 countries in terms of employment, child marriage, child pregnancy and educational deprivation.

The report says that 1.2 billion children in the world are exposed to one of three main threats.

According to the report, eight of the 10 countries where children are in the worst situation are in West and Central Africa, while children in Niger face the highest level of threat.

This is while Singapore, Slovenia, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Ireland, the Netherlands, Iceland, Italy and South Korea are among the top ten countries in terms of children's living conditions.

Helle Torting-Schmidt, executive director of the charity Save the Children, said in a statement: "More than half of the world's children are at risk of deprivation and abuse at the beginning of their lives, whether because they are girls, poor or living in a war zone."

He added: "Governments can and should do their utmost to ensure that every child has the best start in life."

Ms. Torting-Schmidt emphasized: "Some countries have similar economic and income situations, but we see significant differences in the situation of children in them. This fact shows that policies, budget allocations, and political commitment can have different and important results."

The study says that more than one billion children live in poor countries and 240 million children live in countries affected by conflict and violence. Meanwhile, 575 million girls live in countries where women and girls face serious discrimination.

According to the study, 153 million people living in 20 countries, including South Sudan, Somalia, Yemen and Afghanistan, face all three major threats.
