Bushehr nuclear power plant temporarily shut down

A spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran announced that the Bushehr nuclear power plant has been "temporarily" shut down and disconnected from Iran's national power grid for fuel replacement and necessary repairs.

According to ISNA, Behrouz Kamalvandi, spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, announced the news and said that the shutdown of the power plant will last about two months.

Previously, Mohammad Ahmadian, deputy director of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, said that the Bushehr nuclear power plant is currently facing "numerous problems" and that its operation next year will be accompanied by "ifs and buts."

Construction of the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant began before the revolution with a German design, but was halted for a while after the 1979 revolution and then its completion was handed over to Russia. The plant was finally connected to Iran's national electricity grid after 16 years, in 2011.

The nominal capacity of the Bushehr power plant is 1,000 megawatts per year, but the plant's current capacity is less than that. According to reports, the Bushehr power plant produces about 2 percent of Iran's electricity consumption.
