New York Times: Israel informed the US that they killed the IRGC officer

The New York Times reported, citing an intelligence official, that Israel has told the United States that it was involved in the killing of Hassan Sayyad Khodayi, an officer in the Revolutionary Guards.

The report, published on Wednesday, June 25, says that Israeli officials told the Americans that "the move was a warning to Iran to halt the operations of a secret group within the Quds Force, known as Unit 840."

The New York Times, citing government, military, and intelligence officials, writes, "Unit 840's mission is to kidnap and assassinate foreigners around the world, including Israeli citizens and officials."

The report continues, citing the aforementioned intelligence source without mentioning his name, "Colonel Khodayi was the deputy commander of Unit 840 and played a role in planning overseas conspiracies against foreigners, including Israelis."

Israeli media had previously reported that the country's government had increased security measures at its embassies and consulates around the world following the killing of Hassan Sayyad Khodai.

According to the Times of Israel and Israel's Channel 13 television, the country is concerned about a "retaliatory attack" from Iran.

Mr. Khodayi was killed in eastern Tehran on Sunday, June 25. The Revolutionary Guards called the incident a “terrorist act” and said “factors affiliated with global arrogance” were involved. The military establishment also referred to Colonel Hassan Sayyad Khodayi as the “defender of the shrine,” a term used in reference to Iranian forces in the Syrian civil war.

The New York Times continues, citing its source, that the Israelis told the United States that Colonel Khodayi was responsible for Unit 840's operations in the Middle East and countries neighboring Iran and "has been involved in terrorist attacks against Israelis, Europeans, American citizens and officials in Colombia, Kenya, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates over the past two years."

Iran has not yet confirmed the existence of a special unit called Unit 840. Iranian officials have also not yet responded to the Israeli accusations against Colonel Khodayi, only warning that Iran will take "revenge."
