The National Security Advisor of the future US administration's reaction to Zam's execution

Jake Sullivan, Biden's pick for the position of US National Security Advisor, condemned the execution of Ruhollah Zam and emphasized that the United States, along with its allies, will stand against human rights violations in Iran.

Jake Sullivan, President-elect Joe Biden's pick for the position of national security adviser, called the execution of Ruhollah Zam a "disgusting violation of human rights" by the Islamic Republic and emphasized that the United States stands with its allies against human rights violations in Iran.

Sullivan wrote on his personal Twitter page on Sunday evening, December 13: "The execution of Ruhollah Zam, a journalist who was denied due process and convicted for exercising his universal rights, is another horrific example of the Iranian regime's human rights violations."

The execution of Ruhollah Zam has sparked strong international reactions. The European-Iran economic summit, which was scheduled to be held in Tehran on Sunday (December 14), was canceled following the execution of Ruhollah Zam.

The French Foreign Ministry announced that its ambassador, along with the ambassadors of Germany, Austria and Italy, would not attend the meeting. An editor of the Guardian newspaper, who was to host one of the sessions, also called Zam's execution "disgusting" and said he would refuse to attend the Europe-Iran economic summit.

Jake Sullivan continued his tweet by emphasizing that the United States, along with its allies, will “stand firm and will not remain silent” against human rights violations in Iran.

Senator Chris Coons, a Democrat from Delaware, also reacted to the execution of Ruhollah Zam on his personal Twitter page, writing that by executing Zam, the Iranian government “once again demonstrated its cruelty and disregard for human rights.” He emphasized the “condemnation of such barbaric acts” and wrote: “We must do more to protect freedom of speech, media, and protest [in Iran].”

Ruhollah Zam, who resided in France, was arrested in October last year following a trip to Iraq and transferred to Iran. In July of this year, Branch 15 of the Islamic Revolutionary Court in Tehran considered 13 of his charges to be “instances of corruption on earth” and sentenced him to death. This sentence was also confirmed by the Supreme Court and was carried out on the morning of Saturday, December 12.
