The European Parliament called for sanctions against the perpetrators of the murder of Mahsa Amini and the suppressors of protests in Iran.

On Thursday, the European Parliament condemned the death of Mahsa Amini in the custody of the Ershad patrol and called for sanctions against the perpetrators of the incident.

On Thursday, October 4, the European Parliament passed a resolution condemning the death of Mahsa Amini and calling on the European Union to punish the perpetrators of her murder and those involved in suppressing the recent protests in Iran.

In this session, the European Parliament examined the developments and events in Iran following the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurdish girl, in the custody of the Guidance Patrol, and the widespread protests against the hardline clerical regime in Iran.

"Members of Parliament strongly condemned the death of Mahsa Amini and called for an impartial, effective and, above all, independent investigation into her mistreatment and tragic death," the European Parliament's press office said in a statement.

The statement recalls that Ms. Amini was arrested on September 12 on charges of not complying with strict hijab regulations and died in hospital three days later as a result of physical abuse during her arrest and afterwards.

While strongly supporting the peaceful protest movement in Iran, and in particular the young women who are leading and participating in these protests, the European Parliament has strongly condemned the widespread and disproportionate use of repressive measures by law enforcement and security agencies against protesters, which has led to numerous casualties.

The statement adds: "Members of the European Parliament call on the Iranian government to release all detainees unconditionally as soon as possible and to drop all charges and criminal charges against those who have been arrested solely for exercising their fundamental right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, and all civil and human rights activists who have been arrested in recent days."

In this resolution, the members of the European Parliament also called on the European Union to punish the agents and officials involved in the death of Mahsa Amini and the violent suppression of recent protests based on the "EU human rights sanctions regime."

The European Parliament has also called on the United Nations, and specifically the Human Rights Council, to investigate recent events in Iran.

At the end of this statement, the MEPs called on all European governments that have diplomatic missions in this country to coordinate their actions to defend the rights of the detainees, especially women's rights activists, as well as Iranian citizens who hold European citizenship.
