Four women's rights activists sentenced to a total of 16 years in prison

Nahid Shaghaghi, Akram Nasirian, Maryam Mohammadi, and Asrin Derkale, four women's rights activists, have been sentenced to more than 16 years in prison by the Revolutionary Court.

According to news published on social media, these four women's rights activists, who are members of the "Voice of Iranian Women" association, announced in a text published on social media that on December 9, Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court, headed by Judge Afshari, had sentenced each of them to a total of four years and two months in prison on charges of "gathering and collusion," "propaganda against the system," and "pretending to commit an unlawful act by not wearing a hijab."

Esrin Derkale also announced on her Instagram page that only three years of this sentence will be enforced.

Akram Nasirian was arrested by security forces in early May, Nahid Shaghaghi in late May, Maryam Mohammadi in early July, and Asrin Derkale in early August. They have now been temporarily released from Evin Prison on bail pending the completion of the trial.

According to a report by Amnesty International, in 2018, more than seven thousand people, including participants in demonstrations, students, journalists, women's rights activists, environmental activists, labor activists, and ethnic and religious minority rights activists, were arrested in Iran, and hundreds were sentenced to prison.

The US State Department also says that the Iranian regime has arrested thousands of protesters, civil activists, and representatives of workers and other trade unions in the last two years.

The United States has repeatedly and on various occasions condemned the violent confrontations and widespread repression of protesters and civil activists, as well as the repeated and persistent violations of the rights of Iranian citizens by the ruling regime in that country.
