Kimia Alizadeh, the only Iranian female athlete to win an Olympic medal, will go to Tokyo under the white flag.

Kimia Alizadeh, Iran's only female Olympic medalist, whose asylum application was recently accepted by Germany, will compete under the white flag at the Tokyo Summer Olympics.

According to Reuters, Kimia Alizadeh will be a member of the Olympic refugee team this summer and will compete in taekwondo.

Kimia Alizadeh was a member of the Iranian national team at the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics and won a bronze medal in taekwondo. This was the first medal in Iranian sports history in the women's competition at the Olympic Games.

Kimia Alizadeh fled Iran last year and sought asylum in Germany. During this time, she received requests from the Netherlands, Canada, Belgium, and Bulgaria to compete in taekwondo competitions on behalf of these countries.

But he rejected these requests and wants to compete in the Tokyo Summer Olympics as a member of the Olympic Refugee Team and under the white flag.

Kimia Alizadeh says she left her homeland because she was tired of being used as a propaganda tool.

"Taekwondo changed my life," Ms. Alizadeh told Reuters. "When I won a medal, I was the first Iranian woman, and after that, everyone knew me, and ... it was hard."

The 22-year-old athlete currently lives in the city of Aschaffenburg in Bavaria, and trains with his wife.

Next month, if he succeeds in the European qualifying competition in Sofia, he will qualify for the Tokyo Olympics.

If Kimia Alizadeh qualifies for the Olympics, she will join the refugee team, which will be selected in June from among 55 athletes in 12 sports.

According to the German Taekwondo Federation, the federation's president personally contacted the German Interior Minister and discussed the Iranian athlete's asylum request. Kimia Alizadeh is the third athlete to receive asylum in Germany.

"Everything is fine now. The important thing is that I can have my personal life and my sports life at the same time," he told Reuters.
