"G7" emphasizes holding Iran "accountable" for shooting down Ukrainian passenger plane

The Group of Seven industrialized nations emphasized on Tuesday, July 28, at the end of their three-day meeting in southern Germany, that Iran must be held accountable for the downing of Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752.

The G7 countries announced in a statement that they "continue to support international efforts to hold Iran accountable for the unlawful downing of Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752."

On January 8, 2019, a Ukrainian plane with flight number PS752 was shot down by at least two anti-aircraft missiles fired by the Revolutionary Guards minutes after taking off from the runway at Tehran International Airport, killing all 176 people on board.

According to the Canadian government, 55 Canadian citizens and 30 permanent residents were killed on Flight 752.

The Ontario Supreme Court in Canada has ruled that the shooting down of the plane by the IRGC was intentional and a terrorist act.

That incident occurred on the day that Iran fired missiles at a US military base in Iraq in retaliation, five days after the killing of Qassem Soleimani, then commander of the IRGC's Quds Force, on the orders of Donald Trump.

Ukraine, Canada, and the families of the victims of this flight have stated, based on available evidence, that the Islamic Republic used this plane as a "human shield" against a possible US response to Iran's nighttime attack on the Ain al-Assad base in Iraq.

Families of the plane victims have expressed concern that since the beginning of Russia's war in Ukraine, the Kiev government has stopped pursuing the plane crash.

The government of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, whose country is one of the seven industrialized countries of the Group of Seven, is using every opportunity on the international stage to put pressure on Tehran in connection with the still-open case of the downed plane.
