Transparency International's 2021 Report: Iran Among the Most Corrupt Countries in the World

Transparency International, in its latest annual report published on Tuesday, February 25, says that Iran ranks 150th out of 180 countries in terms of the extent of financial corruption.

Only a handful of non-African countries, such as North Korea, Venezuela, Turkmenistan, Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Lebanon, and Yemen, are worse off than Iran.

Iran is on par with Guatemala, Guinea, and Tajikistan in terms of the extent of financial corruption.

In terms of the Corruption Perceptions Index, this international organization gives countries a score from zero to 100, and the higher the score, the better the country is in terms of transparency. Iran's score is 25, making it among the most corrupt countries.

For the second consecutive year, Transparency International says that there are not many positive changes in the level of transparency and the fight against corruption in the world, and 131 countries have not been successful in fighting corruption over the past decade.

The report points to the direct relationship between corruption and violations of human rights and democracy, and says that improving the situation of democracy and human rights will lead to improving the situation of corruption in the world.

The report, citing the high scores of countries such as Denmark, Finland, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, Sweden, and Switzerland on the corruption index, says that countries with high levels of democracy have been more successful in fighting corruption.

The worst countries in terms of corruption are South Sudan, Syria, Somalia, Venezuela, Yemen, and North Korea, in that order.

The report adds that 68 percent of countries ranked below 50 on the Corruption Perceptions Index last year: 25 countries have improved significantly on the Corruption Perceptions Index since 2012, but 23 have worsened.
