UN Rapporteur Calls on Iran to Conduct "Independent Investigations" into 1967 Executions

In her latest report, Asmeh Jahangir, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Iran, has called for an independent and comprehensive investigation into the killing of political prisoners in 2018.

In this report, which was completed in August and sent to the UN Secretary-General, Ms. Jahangir devoted a detailed section to the issue of the 1967 executions, the publication of Ayatollah Montazeri's audio file about these executions, and the destruction of the mass graves of those executed in Ahvaz.

The UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Iran has emphasized in his report the right of families of executed persons to "know the details and truth of what happened to their loved ones without fear of government retaliation."

In this report, he points out the problems that have arisen for Maryam Akbari Monfared, a prisoner who has been writing letters to pursue the execution of her family members in the 1960s, and states that the families of the executed have the right to be informed of the facts of these events.

Another part of Ms. Jahangir's report refers to the attempt to destroy the mass graves of those executed in 2018 in Ahvaz by dumping garbage and debris around them, and states that the Islamic Republic authorities intend to gradually remove the cement structures marking the location of these graves and transform the area by creating green space.

Previously, reports had been published about the destruction of the graves of those executed in 1988 in Mashhad by emptying the soil on them.

In this regard, Amnesty International, in a statement published on its website on Tuesday, September 4, condemned the attempt to destroy the mass graves of those executed in Ahvaz in 1967 and called for it to stop.
