Biden's conversation with Macron: Ready to cooperate on Ukraine, Syria, and Iran's nuclear program

On Tuesday, November 10, US President-elect Joe Biden spoke separately by phone with the leaders of France, Germany, and Ireland, as well as the British Prime Minister.

The statement from the Biden and Harris presidential transition offices said that in a telephone conversation between the president-elect and the French president, Joe Biden thanked Emmanuel Macron for congratulating him on the US election.

In this call, Joe Biden emphasized the need to strengthen relations between the United States and France.

According to the statement, Joe Biden and Emmanuel Macron discussed and consulted on a range of issues, including combating the coronavirus, climate change, human rights, and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, NATO.

The statement stated: He (Joe Biden) also expressed his readiness to work together on global challenges, including security and development in Africa, the conflicts in Ukraine and Syria, and Iran's nuclear program.

No further details about this conversation have been released.

In May 2018, the Donald Trump administration withdrew from the nuclear agreement with Iran, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), and has imposed extensive sanctions against Tehran.

Despite this action by the US government, France, along with Germany and Britain, remained in the JCPOA agreement and called for the agreement to be preserved.

During the election campaign, Joe Biden emphasized that his administration's policy would be to return to the JCPOA, but before that, Iran must fulfill its nuclear commitments and return to the red lines set in the JCPOA.

The government of the elected president will begin its work on January 20 of next year.

This comes as the US Treasury Department imposed new sanctions against Iran on Tuesday.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also said on Tuesday: "Today, the United States is sanctioning members of an illicit Iranian procurement network. We remain resolutely committed to countering any activity that threatens our national security."

Mike Pompeo added: "Our message is clear: If you do business with Iranian weapons proliferators, you expose yourself to the risk of US sanctions."

Elliott Abrams, the US special representative for Iran and Venezuela, also emphasized on Tuesday that US Democrats and Republicans have "broad agreement" on confronting Iran's actions and policies in the region.

Elliott Abrams assured that the current US administration's policy towards Iran will continue after the next administration takes office in Washington.

The US special representative for Iran and Venezuela has said that the goal of the Donald Trump administration was also to reach negotiations with Iran, and therefore whoever is in the White House in the next ten weeks will be pursuing the same goal.
