An Iranian-Canadian professor was arrested by the IRGC's intelligence agency.

An Iranian professor of "anthropology" at Concordia University in Montreal, Canada, who had gone to Iran for a "research trip," has been arrested by the Revolutionary Guards' intelligence service.

Homa Hoodfar's family said in a statement released on Wednesday, June 9, that on March 9, 2015, two days before she was due to leave Iran, the Revolutionary Guards' intelligence services raided her home and confiscated all of her personal belongings, including her laptop, identification documents, research papers, phone, passports, and some of the university professor's personal books, and informed her that she was prohibited from leaving.

According to Ms. Hoodfar's family, the university professor was released on bail after a while, but her interrogation sessions continued until she was arrested on Monday, June 7, after being summoned to the Security Court without prior notice.

The statement says that Hoodfer's lawyer and family members were not allowed to meet with him and that they were not informed of the reason for the university professor's arrest.

Ms. Hoodfer's family has said she suffers from a serious form of neuromuscular disease called myasthenia gravis (severe muscle weakness) but has not been allowed to give her her medication.

Homa Hoodfar's family emphasizes that they are extremely concerned about the health of this university professor.

The statement notes that Ms. Hoodfer is "not political" and has only been engaged in scientific and research activities, especially on improving the status of women in Islamic societies.

Homa Hoodfar's family, noting that this university professor has Iranian, Canadian, and Irish nationalities, has called on all three governments to seriously follow up on her situation and pave the way for her release.

Homa Hoodfar is 65 years old.

Iran has a history of detaining multi-nationals. Zahra Kazemi was an Iranian national who also had dual Canadian citizenship and was imprisoned after traveling to Iran and died in prison.

The Islamic Republic does not recognize dual citizenship.
