A new study predicts "two million dead and injured" in the event of an earthquake in Tehran

The head of Tehran's Disaster Prevention and Management Organization says that in the event of an earthquake in Tehran, about 60 percent of structures in all regions will be damaged, and if retrofitting is carried out, this figure will reach 40 percent, meaning it will be reduced by 20 percent.
Reza Karami Mohammadi stated regarding the casualties and injuries after the earthquake in the regions of Tehran: "Regions 1 to 5 will have more casualties due to construction, high-rise buildings, and faults, and in total, we will have two million deaths and severe injuries if the earthquake occurs."
According to him, these statistics are related to studies that are underway, and of these two million people, about 400,000 will die within one minute: "If the reinforcement is carried out, the number of deaths and serious injuries will be reduced to 400,000, of which we will have less than 100,000 deaths."
Mr. Karami Mohammadi further stated that the dilapidated area in Tehran is 3,268 hectares.
Mohammad Aghamiri, a member of the Tehran City Council, also said in relation to the report presented by the head of the Crisis Management Organization that from 2006 to 2018, we had 1,185 earthquakes with a magnitude greater than 2.5.
He added: "From 122 AH to 1397, fifteen earthquakes measuring 6 on the Richter scale occurred within a radius of 150 kilometers from the center of Tehran, and the last earthquake measuring 6 on the Richter scale occurred in 2004, when Tehran also shook. Based on the return period of these earthquakes, we are expected to have an earthquake measuring 6 on the Richter scale in 1469."
This Tehran City Council member says that a budget of $10 billion is needed to improve the safety of places.
Experts have been warning about a major earthquake in Tehran for years, and this has caused a lot of concern among citizens. However, after a while, the issue is forgotten.
