14 killed, 24 injured in bus overturning accident in Mazandaran province

The head of the emergency services in Mazandaran province announced that 14 people were killed and 24 others were injured when a bus overturned near Savadkouh city on Sunday, November 5.

According to the Iranian Broadcasting Corporation (SDA), Saleh Tabari said that 9 women and 15 men who were injured in the incident were transferred to the "Zirab Martyrs" Hospital, and treatment or efforts to send them to other medical centers are continuing.

According to Pirhossein Kolivand, head of the country's emergency services, a bus was traveling from Tehran to Gonbad on Sunday when it overturned at 6:46 p.m. after the second "Versak" tunnel.

The second tunnel, "Versk", is located near Savadkouh County in Mazandaran Province.

According to Mr. Kolivand, two of the people killed in the incident were children under the age of four.

The Iranian Broadcasting Corporation announced that the bus hit the guardrail and then the concrete wall of the road and overturned "due to the driver's inability to control the vehicle."

Iran is one of the world's most accident-prone countries in terms of driving. According to a report published by the Central Insurance Research Institute of Iran, among 190 countries in the world, Iran has the highest road fatality rate after the African country of Sierra Leone.

According to Taghi Mehri, head of the Iranian Police Traffic Police, from 1998 to the end of last year, 459,000 people have been killed in traffic accidents and more than 4.5 million people have been injured.

The incident of a bus carrying students overturning in Hormozgan province on September 1st had many repercussions, and a number of government officials and members of parliament have issued messages calling for action against those responsible.

A bus carrying 45 passengers, including female students from the cities of Rudan and Minab, who were traveling to Shiraz to participate in the Farzanegan National Army, overturned, leaving nine dead and many injured.

According to Hassan Nouri, the country's deputy emergency director, two of the injured in the incident had "limb amputations" and two others had "spinal cord amputations."
