Christians of South Lebanon Besieged by War; Hope for Peace at Easter’s Dawn

Christians in southern Lebanon are besieged by war, facing escalating clashes and resource shortages, as they await peace that might arrive alongside Easter.

With escalating clashes in southern Lebanon, the situation of thousands of Christians living in the border areas of this country has become more critical than ever before. Residents of cities such as Ramish, Ain Aabel, and Debbel, which are predominantly Christian communities, are facing complex and unsafe conditions amid military tensions between Israel and Hezbollah.

While many residents of southern Lebanon have left the region following warnings and evacuation orders, a significant portion of Christians in these areas have chosen to remain in their homes. This decision, rooted in their deep attachment to the land, churches, and their local identity, has now exposed them to serious dangers.

Recent developments, particularly the withdrawal of Lebanese Army forces from some border areas, have compounded concerns. These forces previously played an important role in creating a sense of security for residents. Their departure, at a time when exchanges of fire between the parties have intensified, has created a noticeable security void.

A religious leader in the region described the situation to media as follows: “The Lebanese Army protected us and gave us strength.” He added that this withdrawal has created a sense of insecurity among the people. These statements reflect widespread concerns that have formed among Christian families in the region.

Beyond security threats, humanitarian crises are also intensifying. Shortages of food, fuel, and the possibility of cut-offs to vital services such as water and electricity have confronted people with serious daily challenges. A local priest, referring to the difficult conditions residents face, said: “What is happening to us is that we are caught between a rock and a hard place. Missiles and rockets are flying over the city.” He also expressed hope, saying: “I hope the war will end by Easter and true peace will be established.”

According to reports, the ongoing clashes have so far resulted in significant loss of life and widespread displacement of residents in southern Lebanon. Critical infrastructure has been damaged in some areas and access to basic services has been limited. This situation, particularly for religious minorities concentrated in specific areas, has created greater challenges.

Efforts have also been made at the international level to reduce harm. American officials have stated that they have asked Israel to refrain from targeting Christian villages, provided that these areas are not converted into bases for military activities. However, practical assurance of these requests on the battlefield remains uncertain.

As Easter approaches, local churches have taken special measures to protect the safety of the faithful. Among these, the timing of religious ceremonies has been changed to reduce nighttime travel and potential dangers. These measures demonstrate the efforts of religious leaders to preserve the spiritual life of the community amid difficult circumstances.

Meanwhile, some residents are emphasizing their decision to stay. A local official on this matter said: “If you separate the roots of a tree from the soil, will it remain alive? If you take us away from our lands, we want to die or return to them. We are attached to the soil, to the houses and our churches, to everything in this village. For this reason, we decided not to leave it.”

Middle East experts believe that the historical presence of Christians in southern Lebanon constitutes an important part of this country’s multicultural fabric. The continuation of clashes and forced migration could further alter this demographic balance.

In such circumstances, the hopes of many Christians in the region for a ceasefire and the return of peace, particularly coinciding with Easter, remain fixed; an occasion that symbolizes for them resurrection, hope, and the triumph of light over darkness.
