Christian Citizens Commemorate ‘Gorban Tourani’ 20 Years After His Martyrdom

Turkmen Christian citizens, by lighting candles and presenting flowers, honored the memory of “Gorban Tourani,” a devoted Gospel servant who was killed due to his faith and peaceful activism, on the twentieth anniversary of his death.
On Tuesday, November 25, 2025, on the twentieth anniversary of Gorban Dardi Tourani’s murder, a group of Iranian and Turkmen Christian citizens in various parts of the world, including Stockholm, kept his memory alive by lighting candles and presenting bouquets of flowers. This symbolic ceremony was not only a tribute to a devoted Christian servant, but a reminder of the price many Christian citizens in Iran have paid for their faith.
Gorban Tourani was a Turkmen citizen from Gonbad Kavous, born into a Muslim family, but in the 1990s became acquainted with the Gospel message, which transformed his life. Upon returning to Iran, he established a small house church in his hometown and took its leadership. Reports indicate that at least 12 Turkmen citizens embraced Christian faith through his service and love.
His peaceful activities, which included Bible study, teaching Christian faith, and helping needy families, faced constant threats. Local residents and security forces repeatedly intimidated and threatened him. Despite these pressures, Tourani continued his service, which made him one of the prominent figures in the Turkmen Christian community.
In November 2005, after years of threats, Gorban was kidnapped and, hours after his abduction, his bloodied body was left in front of his house. His death dealt a heavy blow to Iran’s Christian community. After his murder, security forces raided his home and searched it for Bibles and Christian materials. Several Turkmen Christian citizens were also warned that if they continued their religious activities, “Gorban Tourani’s fate” would await them.
Twenty years after this tragic event, the name and memory of Gorban Tourani remain alive among Iranian Christians. For many, he is a symbol of perseverance, loyalty, and love for Christ—a man who shared the Gospel message with kindness and courage among his people and ultimately gave his life for this cause.
Participants in the commemoration ceremony this year, by lighting candles, laying flowers, and offering prayers, emphasized the continuation of his peaceful path. They recalled that Tourani’s martyrdom is not only a historical event, but a living movement in the collective memory of Iran’s Christian community—a movement that continues to inspire faith, hope, and perseverance.
May the memory of this true servant of God, who kindled the light of love and faith in darkness, be eternal.
