Spain’s Evangelical Alliance Harshly Criticizes Abortion Bill, “Fundamental Right or Disregard for the Sanctity of Life?”

Spain’s Evangelical Alliance, while criticizing the government’s plan to make abortion a “fundamental right” in the constitution, considers human life a divine gift that begins from the moment of conception.
According to published reports, Spain’s Evangelical Alliance (AEE) issued a new statement, announcing its strong opposition to the government’s decision to include abortion as a fundamental right in the constitution. The alliance, using explicit language, described this plan as “populist” and “contradictory,” emphasizing that human life is a gift from God and should be protected from the very moment of conception.
Part of the statement reads: “The government’s proposal to make abortion a fundamental right is not a step toward women’s freedom, but rather a populist and contradictory measure that questions the value of life.”
Spain’s Evangelical Alliance continued to criticize government policies in the field of abortion, stating: “Creating websites to introduce abortion centers, without providing comprehensive information about physical, psychological, and spiritual consequences, is a form of indirect encouragement for ending pregnancy.”
The statement emphasized that instead of facilitating abortion, the government should provide supportive and humanitarian solutions for women with unwanted pregnancies, including psychological counseling, social support, and financial assistance. The alliance added: “A society that, instead of supporting life, presents death as a legitimate option, has actually moved away from justice and morality.”
In another section of the statement, the alliance defended the right of physicians and healthcare workers to conscientious objection, stating that no professional should be forced to perform an action that contradicts their faith and conscience. According to the alliance, true freedom only makes sense if respect for Christian conscience and ethical principles is maintained.
The AEE concluded its statement by rejecting the view that the expansion of abortion is a sign of social progress, warning with reference to high abortion statistics in Spain: “Abortion is not a victory for women, but a failure of the pillars of social justice, morality, values, and sense of future.”
According to official statistics from Spain’s Ministry of Health, more than 100,000 cases of abortion were recorded in 2024, the highest rate in the past decade.
The Spanish government, led by Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, has made efforts in recent months to establish abortion as part of women’s rights and to include it in the constitution as a “fundamental right.”
This approach has been welcomed by feminist and left-wing groups, but in contrast, churches, Christian organizations, and pro-life institutions view it as an attempt to normalize sin and disrespect toward divine creation.
Christian church leaders in Europe have also warned in recent weeks that making abortion a legal right is, in fact, a form of removing the concept of sin from public culture.
Spain’s Evangelical Alliance’s confrontation with government policies reflects the growing conflict between Christian worldview and secular values in the West. While politicians emphasize freedom of choice, the Christian community reminds that freedom without respect for life and truth leads to moral servitude.
Ultimately, the question remains whether Spain is moving toward defending the divine dignity of humanity, or along a politicized path that turns life into a tradable commodity.
