March 8, International Women’s Day and the Status of Women in the Holy Bible

March 8, International Women’s Day, is recognized as an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women in various social, cultural, political, and economic fields. This day symbolizes the effort toward gender equality and the realization of women’s rights throughout the world. Alongside this, examining the perspective of the Christian Bible regarding women is also important, as women hold a special position in this divine book and have played significant roles in the history of human salvation.
The Bible, from the beginning of creation, introduces woman as a valuable being and a complement to man. In the Book of Genesis, it is stated that God created Eve from Adam’s rib to be his helper and companion. This demonstrates the inherent equality of man and woman in divine creation.
In the Old Testament, women had prominent roles in the history of the people of Israel. Some of the influential women in this section of the Bible include:
Sarah: the wife of Abraham, who is considered the mother of the people of Israel.
Miriam (sister of Moses): who played an important role in the liberation of the Israelites from Egypt.
Ruth: the bride of Naomi and an example of faithfulness and sacrifice.
Esther: through her courage, saved the Jewish people from destruction.
In the New Testament, Jesus Christ interacts with women with a respectful and loving approach. Some of the prominent women in this section of the Bible also include:
Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ: who had an unparalleled role in the history of salvation.
Mary Magdalene: was the first witness to the resurrection of Jesus Christ and conveyed the news of this miracle to the disciples.
Martha and Mary: the sisters of Lazarus, who were among the close friends of Jesus.
The Samaritan woman: a person to whom Jesus Christ spoke and revealed the truth.
The Apostle Paul also emphasizes in his letters in the New Testament, in the Book of Galatians, that “there is neither Jew nor Greek, neither slave nor free, neither male nor female, for you are all one in Christ.” This verse shows that Christianity considers men and women equal and includes women in an important role in the church and faithful life.
International Women’s Day is an opportunity to examine the elevated status of women in the history and culture of human societies. In the Bible, woman is not only a valuable creature, but plays a vital role in advancing divine purposes. An examination of the Bible’s perspective on women shows that God values and respects women and brings them along in the path of faith and justice. Therefore, honoring this day can be an opportunity for reflection on the role of women and paying tribute to their position in society and the family.
