Identity of Protester Confirmed Whose Body Was Transported by Van

Based on a report circulated from local sources, the identity of the protester killed whose body transport by van was widely shared on social media has been confirmed as Mehran Shakari from Miandoab.

According to this report, Mehran Shakari died on November 12 in Karaj when security forces opened fire during gatherings held on the occasion of the fortieth day of the deaths of Hadith Najafi and Nima Rezadoost.

Mehran Shakari’s grandfather was also among those killed in the Iran-Iraq War. Security agencies have demanded 200 million tomans from Mehran Shakari’s family in order to hand over his body.

Based on published information, security forces threatened Mr. Shakari’s family that their son’s body would only be handed over on the condition that they refrain from holding any mourning ceremonies and bury him without formalities.

Pressure to pay money and heavy deposits, announcing the cause of death of protesters based on other incidents, threats to the lives of other family members and pressuring them for silent burial and preventing mourning, are examples of harassment, torture and persecution of survivors in nationwide protests in the years following the 1979 Revolution in Iran.

In recent days, a video was circulated on social media showing a young man who had been killed by a bullet to the head and had fallen to the ground. Minutes later, his body was transported from the scene by a van, and the circulation of this video was accompanied by widespread reactions from social media users.

Some social media users have also written that Mehran Shakari lived and worked in Karaj.

Another point is that the Islamic Republic government may be facing a budget shortage for suppressing protesters and is trying to compensate through this method (demanding money from the families of victims).
