Iran’s Electricity Shortage Crisis; ‘Large Manufacturers Will Have No Power for Half the Summer’

A member of the electricity producers’ syndicate has reported a 15,000 megawatt power shortage in Iran this summer due to delays in power plant construction.
While a member of the electricity producers’ syndicate has reported a 15,000 megawatt power shortage in the country this summer due to delays in power plant construction, the vice chairman of the Industrial Commission of the Iran Chamber of Commerce says large manufacturers will have no electricity for half the summer.
Payam Bagheri, a member of the electricity producers’ syndicate, told the ILNA news agency on Tuesday, July 21, that in order to prevent power shortages, 5,000 megawatts should have been added to the country’s electricity generation annually in previous years, but this did not happen. Referring to the failure to implement electricity generation growth programs, he stated that this summer we will face a 15,000 megawatt power shortage.
Meanwhile, Abbas Jabal Barazi, vice chairman of the Industrial Commission of Iran’s Chamber of Commerce, said that due to the country’s power shortage, large enterprises have been asked to have 5 to 6 weeks of non-production out of 12 weeks of the summer season.
He further stated that currently some facilities are operating at 50 percent capacity and many are operating at 20 to 30 percent capacity.
According to statistics from the Ministry of Energy, less than half of the government’s programs for building power plants have been implemented over the past three years. Last year, only one-third of electricity generation growth targets were achieved.
The government has set a target of launching more than 5,000 megawatts of new power plants for the current year, while statistics from the Ministry of Energy show that in the first two months of this year, only 648 megawatts of new power plants have been launched.
