Fatimeh Moussavi Deprived of Proper Medical Care in Evin Prison

Hrana News Agency – Fatimeh Moussavi, a political prisoner in Evin Prison, remains deprived of proper medical care and hospital transfer despite severe health conditions and intestinal bleeding.

According to Hrana News Agency, the news outlet of the Iranian human rights activists network, Fatimeh Moussavi, a sick political prisoner in Evin Prison, has been deprived of receiving medical treatment services and hospital transfer.

An informed source regarding her condition told Hrana: “Ms. Moussavi suffers from intestinal colitis disease, digestive problems, and severe nervous migraines. Due to the lack of proper medical attention to this prisoner’s condition, she has again experienced intestinal bleeding, and her digestive problems worsen day by day. However, prison officials have so far refused to transfer this prisoner to the hospital under the pretext of overcrowding in the hospital and lack of sufficient space for her care; they have promised to transfer Ms. Moussavi to the hospital by the end of Mordad.”

He continued: “Ms. Moussavi continues to be deprived of visits with her husband Hassan Sadeghi, a political prisoner in Rajaei Shahr Prison in Karaj who has not been granted any furlough since the execution of his sentence.”

Ms. Moussavi was sent on medical leave last year following severe health conditions and intestinal bleeding, and on March 5 of this year, she returned to Evin Prison after the furlough period ended. She had been deprived of receiving medical treatment services and hospital transfer for a period before being sent on leave.

Fatimeh Moussavi was transferred from Evin Prison to Taleghani Hospital on August 20, 2020, due to severe health conditions and unconsciousness. While in the hospital, she was chained and shackled to a hospital bed by order of Amin Vaziri, the special magistrate for political prisoners. On August 26, 2020, without sufficient medical care and despite the physician’s objection to Amin Vaziri’s order, she was returned to Evin Prison’s quarantine ward. Her return to prison occurred under circumstances where the hospital physician opposed her transfer due to pending test results and incomplete treatment procedures. She was again transferred to Taleghani Hospital in Tehran on September 8, 2020, following a general health deterioration. A day later, she was transferred to the hospital for endoscopy and colonoscopy procedures and was again returned to the women’s ward quarantine of Evin Prison.

Ms. Moussavi was also transferred to Taleghani Hospital in Tehran on October 27, 2020, following severe intestinal bleeding and, despite the medical staff’s objection and medical concerns, was returned to the women’s ward of Evin Prison by order of Amin Vaziri, the magistrate overseeing political prisoners. This political prisoner was transferred to the hospital on February 11, 2021, but after five days and before completing her treatment course, she was again transferred back to prison.

Fatimeh Moussavi and her husband Hassan Sadeghi were arrested on February 1, 2013, following a condolence ceremony for Mr. Sadeghi’s father, who was an opponent of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s government, and were arrested as a family along with their two children, while their home was also sealed. Their daughter was released after three days, and their son, who was underage, was released after approximately one and a half months of detention and interrogation.

Mr. Sadeghi and Ms. Moussavi were released on bail pending trial after one year of detention and interrogation, approximately five months of which was spent in solitary cells in Ward 209 of Evin Prison.

Ultimately, Ms. Moussavi and her husband were sentenced by Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Ahmadzadeh, to 15 years imprisonment each on charges of rebellion and moharebeh through support for the People’s Mujahedin Organization. A ruling was issued for the confiscation of this family’s assets, including Mr. Sadeghi’s place of business and their personal residence. On September 29, 2015, she was arrested again to serve her prison sentence and was transferred to the women’s ward of Evin Prison. In March 2019, the confiscation ruling of the couple’s place of business was executed by the Execution of Imam’s Order Headquarters. Their residence was also confiscated in May 2020 by the Execution of Imam’s Order Headquarters. In February of last year, Hrana reported on the doubled pressure by officials of the Execution of Imam’s Order Headquarters to confiscate this couple’s residence. Previously, the Tehran Province Appeals Court had confirmed the confiscation ruling of this couple’s residence.

This prisoner is a mother of two children who live with their sick grandmother. Visits by this prisoner with Hassan Sadeghi, her husband who is imprisoned in Rajaei Shahr Prison in Karaj, are conditional upon the approval of Amin Vaziri, the magistrate overseeing political prisoners, whereas visits of other couple prisoners are conducted according to normal procedures.

Fatimeh Moussavi was born on May 26, 1967. When she was only 13 years old, she was imprisoned for three years along with her mother. Their charge was moharebeh and rebellion through support for the People’s Mujahedin Organization. Three of Fatimeh Moussavi’s brothers were executed in the 1980s along with the wife of one of her brothers.
