After Robert Malley, Ali Bagheri Kani Also Enters Doha; JCPOA Revival Negotiations in Qatar

After Robert Malley, the US Special Envoy for Iran Affairs, arrived in Qatar, Ali Bagheri Kani, Deputy Political Officer of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Foreign Minister, also entered Doha, the capital of Qatar, on Tuesday afternoon to lead an Iranian delegation for negotiations aimed at resuming JCPOA revival talks.Iran and the United States are ready on Tuesday to begin indirect negotiations in Qatar with the goal of finding a way to save Iran’s nuclear agreement with world powers.

Prior to the entry of Iran’s senior negotiator into Doha, Rob Malley, the US Special Envoy for Iran Affairs, arrived in Qatar on Monday evening. The Twitter account of the US Embassy in Qatar, while announcing Mr. Malley’s arrival, wrote that he held talks with Qatari officials about “joint diplomatic efforts to address Iran issues.”

Iran and world powers agreed to a nuclear deal in 2015 in which Iran would severely limit uranium enrichment in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions. In 2018, then-US President Donald Trump withdrew from this agreement. With Joe Biden’s arrival in the United States, which coincided with the end of Hassan Rouhani’s government, negotiations to revive the JCPOA were resumed, and these talks continued under the current Iranian President Raisi’s administration. However, a few months ago, following the Islamic Republic’s insistence on removing the Revolutionary Guards from the list of terrorist groups compiled by the United States, negotiations were halted.

After a several-month hiatus, Josep Borrell, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, unexpectedly entered Tehran on June 25 and, after a several-hour meeting with Iranian officials, announced that talks between Iran and the United States with European Union mediation would resume.

With the resumption of negotiations, Qatar was chosen as the host of the new round of nuclear negotiations for JCPOA revival, and the negotiations to lift sanctions are set to take place in Doha, the capital of Qatar, starting Tuesday, June 28.

As Saeed Khatibzadeh previously announced, these talks will be conducted indirectly and with “European Union facilitation.”
