Hostage-taking at an Ilam government office leaves four dead

Iran’s official news agency IRNA reported on Wednesday, May 18, of a fatal hostage-taking incident at one of the offices in Ilam.

According to the report, a former employee of the Asset and Property Organization belonging to the Foundation of the Oppressed carried out the hostage-taking at the organization’s premises.

In this incident in the city of Ilam in western Iran, which is said to have now ended, at least four people were killed and several others were injured and wounded.

Hours after the news was released, IRNA news agency, citing the police commander of Ilam, attributed the attacker’s motive for the hostage-taking to “personal disputes with the managers” of the organization.

The number of injured people has been reported as five.

It is said that the hostage-taker was a former member of this organization who had been dismissed.

Shortly after, Delavar al-Qassi Mehr, the police commander of Ilam, identified the attacker as “one of the personnel” of this office.

He said: “A short while ago, one of the employees from government offices in Ilam province carried out a hostage-taking in this organization.”

The Ilam police official further confirmed that the attacker committed suicide: “In this incident where several people were injured, the hostage-taker killed three employees of this office and then committed suicide himself.”

No official information has yet been released about the identity of the hostage-taker.

Security and NOPO (special forces) personnel are present at the scene and are not allowing anyone to pass through.
