Evin Prison; Renewal of Detention Order and Continuation of Jaafar Ebrahimi’s Detention

Hrana News Agency – The detention order of Jaafar Ebrahimi, a teachers’ trade union activist, has been extended for the second time. Despite 95 days having passed since his arrest, Mr. Ebrahimi remains in detention at the Ministry of Intelligence’s detention facility known as Ward 209 of Evin Prison, in an uncertain situation.

According to Hrana News Agency’s report citing the Coordination Council of Iranian Educators’ Trade Unions, the detention order of Jaafar Ebrahimi, a teachers’ trade union activist, has been extended.

Based on this report, today, Thursday, Mordad 13, Samane Abedini, Jaafar Ebrahimi’s wife, visited him in a booth-style visit in the presence of his case officer. Mr. Ebrahimi informed his wife during this visit of the extension of his detention order.

According to Samane Abedini, “Mr. Ebrahimi is currently being held at the Ministry of Intelligence’s detention facility known as Ward 209 of Evin Prison alongside a person accused of common crimes. Additionally, this trade union activist is not in good physical condition.”

During the past month, Jaafar Ebrahimi, along with other teachers’ trade union activists, has been deprived of the right to make phone calls and visits with his family.

In early Tir this year, Mr. Ebrahimi’s family, along with the families of 9 other detained trade union and labor activists, protested the continued detention of these individuals by writing an open letter. In this letter, they called for “an immediate halt to the fabrication of false charges against them” and the unconditional release of their loved ones.

On Khordad 24, Jaafar Ebrahimi, along with two other trade union activists named Mohammad Habibi and Rasoul Badaghi, were transferred to solitary cells in Ward 240 of the prison. These individuals, along with another teachers’ trade union activist named Ali Akbar Baghani, had been arrested on Ordibehesht 10 and transferred to the Ministry of Intelligence’s detention facility known as Ward 209 of Evin Prison.

Previously, Hrana had reported on the continued obstruction by Ministry of Intelligence officials in preventing Jaafar Ebrahimi’s temporary release despite two weeks having passed since the court order and posting of bail. Mr. Ebrahimi was supposed to be released on Khordad 8 of this year from the Ministry of Intelligence’s detention facility known as Ward 209 of Evin Prison after posting a bail of 700 million tomans; something that has not been achieved due to obstruction by security forces.

An informed source told Hrana: “Mr. Ebrahimi’s bail has been posted and the release letter has even been sent to detention facility 209, but the interrogator of the Ministry, despite the judge’s order, has prevented his release. Now there is concern that under this pretext they will keep this trade union activist in detention until the time of executing the sentence.”

In the run-up to Teachers’ Week in Iran, a number of trade union activists were summoned by security agencies and several were arrested. On Sunday, Ordibehesht 11, 1401, active and retired teachers and educators across the country protested the failure to address their demands in front of education departments in more than 40 cities, and several trade union activists were arrested. Hrana had previously published a comprehensive report on the protests of teachers and educators across the country in Ordibehesht of this year.

Hrana, on Khordad 3, had reported on the latest status and continued detention of these citizens.

Jaafar Ebrahimi is a teacher and member of the Tehran Teachers’ Trade Union Association. He has previously been arrested and convicted due to his activist activities. He was sentenced by the Karaj Revolutionary Court in Dey of last year to 4 years and 6 months of imprisonment.
