Reuters: UN Security Council Will Not Review Iran’s Complaint Over Fakhrizadeh’s Killing

A few hours after Mohsen Fakhrizadeh was killed, the Islamic Republic filed a complaint with the UN Security Council in this regard. Now it is being said that the likelihood of pursuing the Fakhrizadeh killing case at this body’s Friday session is very slim.

Diplomats from UN Security Council member states have announced that they do not expect Iran’s complaint regarding the killing of Mohsen Fakhrizadeh to be placed on the agenda of this body.

According to Reuters reporting from New York, the Islamic Republic of Iran has asked the Security Council not only to condemn Fakhrizadeh’s killing but also to take action against those responsible.

Reuters, citing diplomats, stated that the likelihood of the 15 Security Council members addressing Iran’s complaint regarding the Fakhrizadeh case in closed-door sessions on Friday is very slim. To do so, either there must be agreement among Security Council members, or one of the member states must make such a request.

Jerry Matjila, South Africa’s ambassador to the United Nations and the current president of the Security Council, said on Tuesday to reporters that so far, none of the Security Council member states have made such a request.

It has been stated that since no country or organization has claimed responsibility for the attack on Fakhrizadeh, taking action against the perpetrators in the Security Council is irrelevant.

The Islamic Republic claims the attack was carried out by Israel. This is while Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s Prime Minister, has refused to state a position regarding the deadly attack on Fakhrizadeh’s vehicle.

Iran also made a similar request to António Guterres, the UN Secretary-General. In response to Iran’s request, Guterres condemned “any killing or extrajudicial execution.”

The Security Council is scheduled to hold a session on December 22 regarding the 2015 nuclear agreement between the P5+1 and Iran. Reuters does not rule out the possibility that Iran will address the attack on Fakhrizadeh’s vehicle in such a session.
