60 Killed in Russian Attack on School in Luhansk

60 people were killed as a result of the bombardment of a school in the Luhansk region. NATO Secretary General called on Putin to immediately end the war in Ukraine. Guterres condemned the attack on civilians. Attacks on Mariupol intensified.

According to Ukrainian officials, a Russian air strike on a school in the Luhansk region has left dozens dead. Serhiy Haidai, the governor of Luhansk region, stated that 60 people who are still under the building’s rubble are most likely dead.

The Russian air strike occurred on Saturday, May 7. 90 people had taken shelter in this school in the village of Bilohorivka. The school building caught fire and collapsed as a result of the bombardment. The regional governor said that rescue teams managed to rescue 30 people. Bilohorivka is a village about ten kilometers west of Lysychansk where intense fighting is taking place between Ukrainian forces and the Russian army and pro-Russian separatists.

Following the news of civilians being killed in Luhansk, Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, condemned the massacre once again in a statement and warned that “civilians and civilian infrastructure should not be attacked in war.”

Jens Stoltenberg, NATO Secretary General, also called on Vladimir Putin, President of Russia, to stop the war in Ukraine on the “Day of Victory over Nazi Germany.” On Monday, May 9, he told the German newspaper “Die Welt” that he once again urges the Russian President to “immediately end this war, withdraw his forces from Ukraine and begin peace negotiations.”

Stoltenberg emphasized: “We firmly stand by Ukraine and will help this country maintain its right to defend itself.” Stoltenberg said he expects Putin to “once again spread lies about NATO and the West” on this day.

A convoy of civilians evacuated from the Azovstal plant in the besieged city of Mariupol has arrived in Zaporizhzhia. In total, 600 people have been able to leave the city in the past 10 days, but the United Nations says there are still many civilians in Mariupol who have not been able to leave.
