For the First Time in Iran, Electricity Imports Surpass Exports

According to statistics released by Iran’s Ministry of Power, electricity imports increased by 67 percent in Farvardin 1401 (March-April 2022). Meanwhile, electricity exports during this period declined by 54 percent, making Iran a net electricity importer for the first time.

A spokesperson for Iran’s electricity industry told the Young Journalists Club: “In current conditions, the volume of electricity imports exceeds exports, with approximately 500 to 600 megawatts of imports and around 300 to 400 megawatts of exports. There is currently no problem in meeting domestic electricity demand, but if limitations arise, priority will be given to supplying electricity to the domestic market.”

It is worth noting that Iran’s Minister of Industry, Mines and Trade previously stated: “Iran faces a shortage of 10,000 megawatts of electricity in the industrial sector, and meeting this demand requires investments from large companies over four years, which has already begun.” He did not specify the amount of investment or the financial resources needed.

Voice of America had previously examined the country’s water and electricity resource management challenges in multiple reports and stated that experts warn of water shortages and electricity deficits during the coming spring and summer seasons in this province and neighboring provinces.
