Yasmin Moghbeli Selected as Commander of SpaceX Mission to International Space Station

The United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) formally selected Yasmin Moghbeli on Thursday as commander of the SpaceX mission to the International Space Station.

NASA announced in a statement that the agency, in cooperation with the European Space Agency, has completed the selection process for two astronauts to carry out the SpaceX mission to the International Space Station. According to the statement, Yasmin Moghbeli, an Iranian-American astronaut, has been selected to command the operation, while Andreas Mogensen, a European astronaut, will serve as pilot of the mission. Two other mission specialists will be added to the team, but their selection process is not yet finalized.

The mission is scheduled to take place in 2023 from Kennedy Space Center in Florida, and the two will join the astronauts currently at the International Space Station.

This is Yasmin Moghbeli’s first spaceflight mission since joining NASA in 2017.

Yasmin is from Baldwin, New York, and holds a master’s degree in aerospace engineering. As a Super Cobra helicopter pilot and Marine Corps test pilot, she has completed over 150 different missions and has logged 2,000 flight hours in more than 25 different aircraft throughout her career.

She also graduated with distinction from the United States Navy Test Pilot School in Maryland.

Yasmin is also the mother of twin daughters.
