Death of Dual-National Prisoner in Iran; Amnesty International Had Warned About Shokrollah Jaboli’s Serious Condition

According to HRANA, Shokrollah Jaboli had been sentenced to 4 years and 6 months imprisonment on economic charges in one section of his case, while a second section remained open. During the first part of his case proceedings, he was even denied access to a lawyer of his choice.

Human rights organizations have long warned about conditions in Iranian prisons. Following the release of videos by hacking groups exposing how officials mistreated prisoners, Amnesty International called on Islamic Republic authorities to grant independent inspection access to Iranian prisons for the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Iran.

Hours before the Iranian New Year celebration, Jaboli’s son tweeted, citing an Australian official, that they too cannot assist in transferring his father’s body to Australia.

Roger Carstens, Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs of the United States, tweeted on Sunday with New Year greetings, mentioning imprisoned Iranian-Americans in Iran and wrote: “We think of Baquer and Siamak Namazi, Emad Sharqi, and Morad Tahbaz [who also holds American citizenship]; they should be able to celebrate Nowruz in freedom and with their loved ones.”
