Amnesty International Calls for ‘Immediate’ Release of Behnam Mousivand, Political Prisoner

Following the transfer of Behnam Mousivand to a hospital outside Evin Prison due to deterioration caused by a hunger strike, Amnesty International called on Wednesday, April 27, for the immediate release of this political prisoner.

The human rights organization emphasized that Behnam Mousivand is being held in “unjust” detention due to his human rights activities and that “Iranian authorities must release him immediately.”

Mousivand was beaten by prison guards on April 20 for refusing to wear handcuffs and shackles to receive medical services outside the prison, and has been on a hunger strike since that time.

The Hrana news agency reported yesterday, citing informed sources, that Behnam Mousivand has developed serious digestive problems and liver enzyme abnormalities.

It is unclear which hospital the political prisoner was transferred to and what his current condition is.

Following Mousivand’s hunger strike, reports of his severe physical condition have been published in recent days.

This civil activist was sentenced in September 2019 by the Tehran Revolutionary Court to a total of six years in prison on charges including “assembly and conspiracy with intent to act against national security” and “propaganda activities against the system.”

The Court of Appeal confirmed this sentence exactly. However, based on Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code, which provides for enhanced punishment, five years of the sentence will be enforceable.
