Iranian Users React to Government Media’s Use of ‘Special Operation’ in Coverage of Ukraine Developments

Four days after Russia’s military attack on Ukraine and the continuation of worldwide reactions to this comprehensive aggression, media outlets of the Islamic Republic continue to attempt to perpetuate their anti-Western stance by ignoring the nature of Russia’s aggression and referring to this military assault as a “special operation.”

However, the reaction of the Iranian people differs significantly from the official government response regarding Russia’s military attack on Ukraine, and a group of Iranian social media users have reacted to the language used by official media outlets.

Hossein Razaq, an Iranian citizen active on social media, noting that Islamic Republic of Iran media outlets use terms such as “special operation” or “response to Ukrainian aggression” when reporting on Russia’s attack on Ukraine, wrote: “The head of government has also wished for this attack to benefit the region. It seems we’re living in one of Russia’s colonies.”

Sara Massoumi, a journalist, also responded to the use of words such as “special operation” in her Twitter post, addressing some Iranian journalists and reporters: “A journalist does not ask those in power to dictate which words I should use, dear colleague! Besides, Russia’s action is military aggression.”

Another user named Payam Pourfalah, by posting images attributed to Russian soldiers stealing Ukrainian people’s property on Twitter, wrote: “Looting people’s property and Ukrainian banks apparently was also part of Russia’s special operation!!!”

Mohammad Darvish, a researcher and environmental activist, also posted an image of one of Iran’s media outlets that labeled Russia’s military attack on Ukraine as a “special operation” on Twitter and wrote: “Many things people might forget; but they will never forget that Iran’s official media called military aggression against a United Nations member state a ‘special military operation.'”

Sina Valilah, a host and program producer, also posted on Twitter in recent days in response to news published in Iranian media: “So Iraq had a special operation forty years ago in our country and we mistakenly thought it was invasion and war?!”

Another user responded to the terminology used in the news and reports of Islamic Republic of Iran media regarding Russia’s military attack on Ukraine on Twitter: “The leaders of the Islamic Republic don’t even have independence in choosing their words and expressing their positions. The whole world calls Russia’s attack aggression, but our rulers call it a special operation… having no independence is the ultimate humiliation!!!”

Nevertheless, Iran’s printed newspapers, without referring to Russia’s aggression and its disregard for international treaties, are attempting to claim that the war resulted from Ukraine’s reliance on the West.

Tensions between Russia and Ukraine date back to 2013. The two countries signed a peace agreement, but two months ago Russia deployed more than 150,000 military forces on Ukraine’s border, and on the morning of Thursday, March 26 (Esfand 5), Russian President Vladimir Putin issued orders for military operations in Ukraine.

Joe Biden, President of the United States, in a televised speech in response to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, said that Putin is an aggressor who chose this war and will bear its costs. On Friday, March 27 (Esfand 6), the United States sanctioned Vladimir Putin, President of Russia, and Sergei Lavrov, Russia’s Foreign Minister.
