Self-Immolation of Child Marriage Victim in Bampour

On Wednesday, Esfand 11, a 17-year-old girl who was a victim of child marriage in Bampour city in Sistan and Baluchestan province set herself on fire. The physical and psychological damages resulting from marriage during childhood inflict irreparable blows to the lives of these children. Pregnancies under 18 years of age, maternal mortality, depression, suicide attempts, divorce, dropping out of school, and the persistence of the cycle of cultural and economic poverty are among these harms.
According to a report by Hrana news agency, citing the Baluch Activists Campaign, on Wednesday, Esfand 11, 1400, a 17-year-old girl in Bampour city has set herself on fire.
The identity of this teenager has been identified as “F – Marandegani,” 17 years old and from Marandegan village, a subdivision of Irandegan district in Khash city.
This report makes no reference to the current condition of the teenager following the self-immolation.
It is reported that this child marriage victim had previously been subjected to domestic violence and beating by her spouse.
The high rate of marriages of children who marry before reaching intellectual and mental maturity reflects the prevalence of this phenomenon in Iran. The age of marriage in Iran is determined based on “sexual maturity,” while according to experts, sexual maturity is only one aspect of a person’s complete maturation. Development, awareness, education, and freedom of choice are the most fundamental and humane conditions for starting a family.
