Narges Mohammadi Returned to Prison ‘Despite Need for Medical Care’

“Narges Mohammadi has been returned to prison. According to treating physicians, Narges Mohammadi required medical care. Her treatment process had not reached an appropriate point. Judicial and security authorities are responsible for her health. Pressure to return her to prison began three days ago”.

These five sentences summarize the medical case status of Narges Mohammadi, vice president of the Center for Defenders of Human Rights, as stated by her husband Taghi Rahmani on Facebook.

Narges Mohammadi, 2018 Sakharov Prize winner from the American Physical Society, was sentenced in 1388 to five years imprisonment on charges of gathering and conspiracy against national security, five years imprisonment for membership in the “Center for Defenders of Human Rights,” and one additional year for propaganda against the regime, totaling 11 years imprisonment. This sentence was implemented from Ordibehesht 1391.

However, three years later, charges of collaboration with ISIS were also added to her file – accusations that, according to her brother, were brought against her after Narges Mohammadi objected to the execution of several Sunni prisoners.

In autumn 1395, Judge Salaati added another 10 years imprisonment for founding the Legam group (acronym for “abolition of step-by-step executions”) to her sentence.

Neither the favorable opinion of prison physicians and treating physicians simultaneously, nor the legal opinion of the Supreme Court, has persuaded the judge to conditionally release this 2011 recipient of the “State and Swedish Living History Foundation” award.

Now Taghi Rahmani, invoking his wife Narges Mohammadi’s citizenship rights, is asking Iran’s judicial and government officials that at least due to the necessity for medical care, this 2009 recipient of the Italian “Change for Equality – Alessandro Langer” award be granted conditional release.

In past years, neither this family request resulted in Narges Mohammadi’s conditional release, nor multiple requests from organizations such as Amnesty International, the International Federation of Human Rights Defenders, the Human Rights Watch organization, nor a Twitter storm of over one hundred thousand supporters of Narges Mohammadi’s freedom in 1395.
