Indictment Issued for Perpetrators in Muna Haidari Murder Case

The General and Revolutionary Prosecutor of Ahvaz announced the issuance of an indictment for the “perpetrators” in the murder of Muna (Ghazal) Haidari, a young woman whose husband beheaded her.
Sadegh Jafari Cheghani stated that given the complaint from the “blood relatives” of the victims regarding the private aspect of the case and “demanding retribution and other criminal actions by the accused for disturbing public order and hurting people’s feelings,” the prosecution has “requested maximum punishment” for the accused.
Last November, Rokna News Agency published an image of a young man in Ahvaz who had beheaded his 17-year-old wife under the pretext of “honor” and was walking through the streets smiling while holding the severed head.
Following the closure of Rokna news outlet due to the publication of these images, several religious officials of the Islamic Republic, criticizing the re-publication of this news in the media, defended what they called the “honor of the Iranian man.”
The shocking images of the teenage girl’s murder shocked the people of Ahvaz. The mother of the accused murderer claimed that his daughter-in-law had become acquainted with a Syrian man on social media and for this reason went to Turkey, and ultimately after returning to Iran was murdered by her husband named Sajad.
The brutal murder of this young woman from Ahvaz by her husband with the complicity of her brother-in-law and cousins drew significant criticism toward the government for blocking the passage of deterrent laws and also the bill “Preserving Dignity and Protecting Women Against Violence.”
This bill has been drafted for nearly 10 years but has not yet been passed due to opposition from some clergy, and its fate remains uncertain. Iran is one of only four countries that has not acceded to the United Nations Convention for the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women.
In recent years, femicide in Iran has increased, including the beheading of 13-year-old Romina Ashrafi from Talesh by her father, the murder of 22-year-old Rihaneh Ameri from Kerman by her father with an “iron rod,” the killing of Fatema Farahi in Abadan by her husband who was also her cousin, the death of 16-year-old Shakiba Bakhtiar from Kermanshah from her father’s knife wounds, and the shooting of two teenage girls from Sistan and Baluchestan by their family members.
