Israel Targets Latakia Port with Missile Attack

Syrian state television reported on the evening of Tuesday, December 28, that Israel carried out missile attacks on Latakia port.
The assault, which marks the second Israeli air strike on Latakia port in less than a month, resulted in the destruction of a hospital building and several residential buildings and shops.
Syria’s Ministry of Defense stated in a declaration that Israeli “aggression” “caused severe material damage” and that Syrian forces are now assessing the exact extent of the damages.
The Israeli army has periodically targeted various regions of Syria in recent years, claiming its intention is to counter Iranian forces or groups supported by Iran.
One of the most recent incidents of conflict was an Israeli missile attack on Latakia on December 6, during which a number of containers were destroyed. Israeli media outlets claim these containers held weapons shipments sent by Iran.
Live television footage of the attack on Latakia port on the evening of Tuesday also suggests that the container area was targeted again, resulting in damage to surrounding buildings.
Israeli officials claimed following the previous attack that “75 percent of weapons supplied by Iran to Syria were destroyed” as a result of that strike.
The two countries also experienced tensions over the past two days regarding Israel’s new plan concerning the Golan Heights.
According to this plan, Israel seeks to double the population of Jewish settlers in the Golan Heights over five years, a move that Syria has condemned.
Israel seized this region, which is part of Syrian territory, in 1967 and formally annexed it to its own territory in 1982. Apart from the United States, none of Israel’s other Western supporters have officially recognized Israeli “sovereignty” over the Golan.
