Lake Urmia Has Become a ‘Dust Storm Center’

Hasan Abbaspoor, director general of environmental protection in East Azerbaijan, has described the situation of Lake Urmia as a “catastrophe” and stated that this lake is “the largest dust storm center in the region”.
Referring to the presence of 25 wetlands in Lake Urmia’s watershed basin, he said the condition of each of these wetlands “is getting worse day by day” and new and urgent plans must be implemented to save the lake.
The situation of Lake Urmia has been critical over the past fifteen years, and the officials of the Ahmadinejad and Rouhani administrations had previously repeatedly announced the implementation of plans to revive the lake and the success of executed projects.
According to published reports, Iran’s previous government spent 15 trillion tomans to revive Lake Urmia, but so far no detailed report has been published about the extent of project success and the costs incurred.
