Tehran Chamber of Commerce Member: Four Million Tomans for a Four-Member Family is Not a Poverty Line, It’s a Death Line

A member of the Tehran Chamber of Commerce’s board of representatives responded to the statements of the Deputy Minister of Welfare, who claimed that the poverty line for a four-member family is “four million tomans,” saying that four million tomans for a family is not a poverty line, but rather a death line.
Mehrad Abad told ILNA news agency regarding the estimate of Dariush Abouhamzeh, Deputy for Social Welfare at the Ministry of Cooperative, Labor and Social Welfare: This statement differs greatly from the previous statistics that were presented, and economic activists working in the fields of production, import, or export no longer trust the figures that have been given in recent years.
The Deputy for Social Welfare at the Ministry of Cooperative, Labor and Social Welfare, referring to the poverty line of 10 million tomans announced by the Relief Committee, did not consider this figure correct and stated that with these 10 million tomans, 90 percent of Iranians would fall below the poverty line.
Mehrad Abad, a member of the Tehran Chamber of Commerce, stated in this regard that if a family wants to eat meat just a few times during the month, they would need to spend several times four million tomans, and if they don’t have a house in major cities, they would only be able to eat dry bread.
