Pompeo: Zarif and Rouhani are just the window dressing of a corrupt religious mafia; Khamenei is the final decision-maker

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo wrote on Twitter on Monday evening, March 27 US time, in response to reports of Mohammad Javad Zarif’s resignation as Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic: “We’re paying attention to reports of Zarif’s resignation. We’ll see if it sticks. In any case, Zarif and Hassan Rouhani are just the window dressing of a corrupt religious mafia. We know it is Khamenei who makes the final decisions.”

The US Secretary of State wrote: “Our policy has not changed – the regime must act like a normal country and respect its own people.”

Mohammad Javad Zarif, Iran’s Foreign Minister, resigned on Monday, March 27 by posting a message on his Instagram page. Despite the official confirmation of his resignation, Mahmoud Vaezi, the Chief of Staff of Hassan Rouhani, tweeted that Iran’s President has not accepted his resignation.

Mohammad Javad Zarif, through his position as Foreign Minister, sought to present a new face of Hassan Rouhani’s government and the Islamic Republic to the world, and was recognized among Western political circles as a “moderate.” However, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo recently said in Warsaw: “Some say this gentleman is a moderate, but when someone accuses America and Israel of committing murder, he is no longer a moderate. These are signs that Mr. Zarif and Mr. Rouhani are just as revolutionary as the other leaders of the Islamic Republic system.”
