Isfahan Farmers’ Protest Rally Enters Fourth Day

The protest rally of Isfahan farmers against the cutting off of water rights and the drying up of the Zayanderud River entered its fourth day on Thursday, November 20.

In images shared on social networks from Thursday’s gatherings, protesters can be seen chanting slogans and marching through the dried bed of the Zayanderud River.

This protest movement, which concerns the failure to allocate water shares for autumn wheat cultivation, began on Monday, November 17, with farmers gathering in front of the Regional Water Company and the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting center in Isfahan province, and has continued on the bed of the Zayanderud River since then.

Some of the protesters also camped in the Zayanderud River bed on Tuesday night by setting up tents.

The issue of water distribution in Isfahan has faced widespread protests from farmers in various areas in recent years.

The Zayanderud, with a length of over 400 kilometers, has become a seasonal river in recent decades due to lack of rainfall, consecutive droughts, population density, and excessive uncontrolled extraction upstream and usage in factories along the way.
