Gathering on International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women in Sanandaj: ‘No to Femicide’

Reports indicate that coinciding with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on November 25, a group of women and civil activists held a gathering at Kuh Abidar in Sanandaj.
At this gathering, women and civil activists held placards inscribed with messages such as: “Do not kill women,” “Killing women under any name is condemned,” and “No to femicide.”
Based on videos shared on social media, one of the women present at the gathering presented a report on women’s murders, including so-called honor killings in Kurdistan and Iran.
Concurrently with this gathering on Thursday, December 25, a human rights website reported on violence against women in Iran, stating that over the past year, 44 women and girls have been killed in Kurdish-populated regions of Iran, and at least 107 have committed suicide.
Hengaw, a human rights website that covers news from Kurdish-populated regions of Iran, reported on the occasion of the International Day for the “Elimination of Violence Against Women” that from the beginning of December last year through December this year, 44 cases of women and girls’ murders have been confirmed in Kurdish-populated regions, with the majority killed by “close relatives.”
According to this report, among the four Kurdish-populated provinces of Iran, the highest suicide rate of 14 cases belonged to Kermanshah Province, followed by Kurdistan Province.
According to the report, 11 of these murders were motivated by “honor,” 22 due to “family disputes,” two due to “rejection of marriage proposals,” two due to “psychological problems,” four motivated by “theft,” and two due to “financial disputes.”
