Bodies of Four Refugees Found at Belarus-Poland Border

The lifeless bodies of four refugees, including an Iraqi woman, have been found at the border between Poland and Belarus. It is alleged that Belarusian officials are deliberately directing refugees from the Middle East toward the borders of the European Union.

On Sunday evening, September 19, Polish border police announced that three bodies have been found at the border between their country and Belarus in separate locations. Belarus also stated that it discovered one body at its border with Poland. This body belonged to an Iraqi female refugee who was found approximately one meter from the Polish border.

An official from Belarus’s border police told the state television of the country that there is clear evidence suggesting that the body of this Iraqi refugee woman was “brought” from Poland toward Belarus.

Beside the body of this woman, there was a man, an elderly woman, and three children, all of Iraqi nationality. The man, who was the husband of the deceased woman, told the Belarusian state news agency that Polish border officers brought them to the Belarus border and forced them, “under threat,” to enter Belarus. Currently, nighttime temperatures in this region reach as low as five degrees Celsius.

Polish border police reported that in addition to finding three bodies, they were able to rescue eight refugees who were stranded in a swampy area near the Belarus border. Five men and three women were stuck in the swamp for hours. Two of them have been transported to hospitals. The border between Poland and Belarus is currently at the center of news coverage. Poland’s President, Andrzej Duda, declared a state of emergency at his country’s borders on the first of this month. This was because in the previous month, thousands of refugees and migrants from the Middle East entered the European Union through Belarus. Poland has also begun building a fence at its borders with Belarus.

The European Union has spoken of “retaliatory measures” by Belarus and states that Alexander Lukashenko intends to retaliate against European Union sanctions through these actions. It is alleged that Belarusian officials have deliberately brought refugees into the country and are directing them toward the borders of the European Union.
