“The Dam of Iran’s Hospital System is Breaking”

Payam Tabarsi, head of the infectious disease department at Masih Daneshvari Hospital in Tehran, says that with the increase in the number of people infected with the Delta variant of coronavirus, hospital capacity has reached its maximum, and according to him, the dam of Iran’s hospital system is breaking.
He emphasized that “the country’s health system is on the verge of collapse.”
According to Tabarsi, the public’s insufficient awareness of the mutated type of coronavirus and the increase in travel, gatherings, and religious ceremonies have caused the number of deaths and infections from this disease to rise severely.
The Hassan Rouhani government and the coronavirus task force, despite requests from experts and the Supreme Leader’s directive regarding a two-week shutdown review, continue to refrain from implementing complete city lockdowns.
Based on official statistics from the Ministry of Health, more than 39,000 people were added to the number of coronavirus cases in Iran in the past 24 hours.
Based on statistics that are not endorsed by domestic and international experts, 378 patients with COVID-19 have also lost their lives.
Concurrently with the increase in the number of cases, the number of red-zone cities has reached 285 cities, and severe shortages of hospital beds and medical staff have been reported in some areas.
Despite promises from health officials, only 2 million and 850 thousand people have received both doses of the coronavirus vaccine to date.
