Rally in Support of Khuzestan People; Legal Case Filed Against 9 Civil Activists at Evin Prosecutor’s Office

Arash Sadeghi, Arash Kiarsi, Ruhollah Mardani, Narges Mohammadi, Jafar Azimzadeh, Rasoul Badaghi, Pouran Nazemi, Hamid Asef, and Behzad Hamayouni faced legal cases opened at Branch 2 of the Investigation Department of Evin Prosecutor’s Office. These civil activists were arrested on the 29th of Tir month during a rally in support of the people of Khuzestan in Tehran and were released hours later.
Hrana News Agency, the news outlet of the Human Rights Activists in Iran group, has opened a new legal case against Arash Sadeghi, Arash Kiarsi, Ruhollah Mardani, Narges Mohammadi, Jafar Azimzadeh, Rasoul Badaghi, Pouran Nazemi, Hamid Asef, and Behzad Hamayouni at Branch 2 of the Investigation Department of Evin Prosecutor’s Office.
These 9 civil activists were informed in recent days through an SMS from the Sana electronic system of the opening of a new case against them. The SMS stated that the reason for opening the case was participation in an illegal gathering in front of the Interior Ministry building.
On the 29th of Tir month this year, these civil activists were arrested following a rally and march held in support of the people of Khuzestan, which started from the front of the Interior Ministry building toward Zarathushtra Street, and were released hours later.
The arrest of these citizens was accompanied by beating and violence. Before their arrest, these individuals stated in a video that some of them were beaten by military forces in front of the Interior Ministry.
Popular gatherings that began on the night of Thursday, the 24th of Tir month in Khuzestan Province in protest against water shortage and poor management by officials in the province, spread to at least 41 cities over two weeks. Hrana had previously reported in a report titled “Summary Report of the Second Week of Khuzestan Protests/Protests in 41 Cities” about dozens of citizens being killed and wounded and hundreds of people being arrested.
