UN: 18,000 Civilians Killed and Wounded in Airstrikes During Yemen War

A United Nations delegation announced on Wednesday that since the start of the war in Yemen in 2015, at least 18,000 civilians have been killed or wounded in airstrikes.

A group of UN experts in a report presented to the Human Rights Council stated that the Yemeni people have witnessed an average of 10 airstrikes per day, which from March 2015 totaled more than 23,000 airstrikes in all.

According to this report, it has been determined that both sides in the war have violated international laws; however, all airstrikes have been attributed to the coalition led by Saudi Arabia.

Iran-backed Houthi militants have taken control of large parts of this country since 2015, particularly Sana’a, the capital of Yemen. The legitimate government of Yemen, based in Aden in the south of the country, has been engaged in war with the Houthis since March 2015 with the cooperation of a military coalition led by Saudi Arabia.

The Yemen war, which is referred to as a proxy war between Iran and Saudi Arabia, has become one of the most complex crises in the region and on the international stage over the past six years.

According to the United Nations, Yemen is grappling with the world’s largest humanitarian crisis in terms of famine, and tens of thousands of children have died from hunger during the war in this country.
