Biden’s Condition for Returning to JCPOA: Iran’s Commitment to Its Obligations

Joe Biden’s proposed nominee for Secretary of State believes that the United States is not under pressure to make a decision about returning to the JCPOA. Antony Blinken has stated that the United States’ return to the JCPOA is conditional on Iran’s commitment to its obligations.

Antony Blinken, Joe Biden’s proposed nominee to lead the State Department, as well as Avril Haines, Biden’s nominee to manage national intelligence, have pointed to the difficulties surrounding the United States’ return to the nuclear agreement.

Reuters news agency reported on Wednesday, January 19 (December 30) from Washington about the likely policy of the Biden administration regarding Iran’s nuclear program.

Joe Biden had previously announced that the United States is willing to return to the nuclear agreement and lift the imposed sanctions against the country if Iran commits to its JCPOA obligations.

Regarding Biden’s statement, Antony Blinken said: “We will have a very long road ahead of us to reach such an objective.”

Biden’s proposed nominee to head the U.S. State Department said that whenever Iran returns to its commitments, the United States can then take steps toward returning to the JCPOA.

Blinken emphasized that the goal of the new U.S. administration, aside from limiting Iran’s nuclear activities, is to limit the country’s missile activities.

Blinken stressed that the issue of Iran’s regional activities and this country’s support and backing of its allied forces is also among the matters that the Biden administration will address.

Avril Haines also emphasized that the United States’ path to returning to the nuclear agreement is long and the new U.S. administration is not under pressure to return to the nuclear agreement.
