Manirah Arabshahi Denied Medical Care Despite Deteriorating Health Condition in Prison

Manirah Arabshahi, a civil activist imprisoned at Karaj’s Kachui Prison, has been denied medical care despite her deteriorating physical condition.

According to a report by the human rights website Hrana on Thursday, Mordad 7, Ms. Arabshahi, who underwent thyroid gland surgery and drainage in mid-Ordibehesht of the current year, returned to prison on Mordad 1. Despite her doctor’s orders for weekly testing and medical follow-ups, she has not received any medical examination since her return to prison.

An informed source quoted Ms. Arabshahi’s surgeon as telling Hrana that she faces “life-threatening” conditions and “risk of shock” and requires immediate medical attention.

The informed source also stated that Ms. Arabshahi’s condition has gone unaddressed since her return to prison until Thursday, Mordad 7, under the pretext of the absence of a doctor in the prison. This is despite the fact that she cannot even speak properly, and has been vomiting everything she eats immediately for the past four days.

Manirah Arabshahi, along with her daughter Yasmin Aryani and Maryam Akhtar Koushavarzi, were arrested in the summer of 2018 following the release of a video showing them distributing flowers to Tehran Metro passengers without headscarves on International Women’s Day.

Ms. Arabshahi was released on medical furlough on Ordibehesht 13 after posting a bail of 500 million tomans.

Regarding Ms. Arabshahi’s certificate of inability to endure imprisonment, in addition to the legal medicine doctor, confirmation by three other qualified doctors is administratively required. However, she has previously been examined by only one doctor who confirmed her inability to endure imprisonment, but the opportunity for examination by two other doctors has not yet been provided.
