Ali Younesi and Amirhosein Moradi, Outstanding Students, One Year in ‘Temporary Detention’; No Court Hearing Has Been Held Yet

After one year has passed since the temporary detention of Ali Younesi and Amirhosein Moradi, two outstanding students at Sharif University of Technology, one of the case lawyers announced that their court hearing has not been held, stating that his clients are accused of “corruption on earth.”

Mostafa Neili, the defense lawyer for Ali Younesi, in response to the postponement of the court hearing for these two detained students that was supposed to be held on Sunday, the 22nd of Farvardin at Branch 29 of the Tehran Islamic Revolutionary Court, stated on his Twitter page that the reason for not holding this court session was the failure to transfer these two political prisoners from Ward 209 to the revolutionary court.

Reza Younesi, the brother of Ali Younesi, a detained student in Iran, also confirmed this news by posting a text on Twitter: “Officers with a free hand from the Ministry of Intelligence have fooled everyone, including the judge of the judiciary.”

Mostafa Neili also stated in his interview with “Amadad,” an Iranian news website, that the charge attributed to these two detained students is “corruption on earth.” Referring to the public interrogation session for these two imprisoned students held in June of last year, he stated that the case lawyers have faced strange and unconventional issues from the beginning of this case that “cannot be measured by any legal, ethical, or religious standard.”

He further added that despite numerous follow-ups made until today and during one year of temporary detention of Ali Younesi and Amirhosein Moradi, the case lawyers have not been able to have any in-person or even telephone conversation with them.

This lawyer also referred to the detention of these two imprisoned students in Ward 209 of Evin Prison, stating that detention in solitary cells or security wards is considered “a violation of the rights of the accused” and in many cases this action can be considered “torture.”

Ali Younesi, a computer engineering student, winner of the silver medal of the 2016 Astronomy Olympiad and the gold medal of the 2017 Astronomy Olympiad, and Amirhosein Moradi, a physics student and winner of the silver medal of the 2017 National Astronomy Olympiad, were arrested on Friday, the 22nd of Farvardin 1399 by plainclothes forces without presenting an arrest warrant and with beatings at their residence, and this arrest has continued to date.

The U.S. State Department has repeatedly condemned violent confrontations and widespread suppression of protesters, as well as repeated and continuous violations of the rights of Iranian citizens by the Islamic Republic of Iran in various cases.

In the annual human rights report of different countries published by the U.S. State Department, the section on the status of human rights in Iran in 2020 states that the authorities of the Islamic Republic of Iran not only commit human rights violations in Iran, but are also complicit in human rights violations in Syria through military support for Bashar al-Assad, President of Syria, and the forces of Hezbollah in Lebanon, as well as in Iraq through support for Iran-aligned militias, and in Yemen through support for Houthi rebels.
